Don't you feel like your generation is just lazy?
Lazy? I'd say apathetic.
Isn't it the same?
No. My generation is criticized and toiled with, and I don't see why not - just turn on the TV and watch what they're feeding us. But my generation is not lazy. My generation fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. My generation fought for womens rights in a fury that hadn't been seen since the 19th Amendment. My generation got our first black President elected. My generation fought for Gay rights for the first time in American history. And with all that, we are apathetic, and that's because things aren't going to be better for us down the road. We are the first generation expected to make less than our parents. We are the first generation to see America lose its status as a super power. We've lived through the worst economic times since the Great Depression, and are forced to take out thousands of dollars in student loans at the same time, all while our college degrees slowly turn into a highschool diploma. We've done plenty, and expect nothing. So no, I wouldn't say we're lazy, just apathetic.
(One of my best friends on campus has cerebral palsy, and is confined to a wheelchair. Between the CP and a strong accent, she sometimes has trouble making herself clearly understood to strangers. She is having a strong allergic skin reaction to something; her aid has gone for the night, so I go with her to the hospital. The nurse is crouched down in the waiting room beside my friend’s chair.)
“And how old is she?”
(Instead of responding to my friend, the nurse looks at me.)
“Is that correct?”
“I would assume. She can speak for herself. I’m only here as a friend.”
Nurse. “And for how long have you had these symptoms?”
“I noticed them this morning, but they’ve gotten very bad.”
(Again, the nurse looks at me instead of my friend; I say nothing. She continues doing this for several moments, asking questions and then looking at me, until my friend finally snaps.)
“You talk to me, not her! She’s my friend; she doesn’t know anything about my medical stuff.”
(The nurse stands up and storms away. I follow, more than a little angry on my friend’s behalf.)
*to me* “You may think it’s nice to let her pretend to be a real person, but some of us are trying to run a hospital.”
“Excuse me?! She’s in a wheelchair; she’s not stupid! She IS a real person.”
“Well if you want to pretend that’s true, that’s on you.”
(I am struck completely silent in rage and shock. A doctor, who I haven’t seen until he SLAMS paperwork down on the desk, interjects.)
“Nurse. Supervisor. Now.”
(The three of them go back into an office where the nurse comes out in tears; she was suspended for her behavior.)
From Not Always Working.
Awful that this happened. But glad that at least the doctor managed to recognize that what the nurse did was so completely wrong.
Stories like this need to be circulated. They need to be read by people who claim that ableism isn't such a big deal, that it's "annoying but benevolent", that it's "harmless". People need to read these stories, including people with disabilities who have been lucky enough in life to experience only minor insults and bureaucratic hiccups. People like me, most of my life.
Shit like this happens. People like this do exist. I still believe that people this poisonous about disabled people are few and far between, but they make up for their low numbers by doing massive damage wherever they go.
And to me, the most galling thing is that people like this nurse probably really do believe they are being brave and bold to hold the mean and wrong beliefs that they do. That nurse may have been crying, but I bet by bedtime she was telling herself she was another martyr of "political correctness" or somesuch.
Meet CryptoLocker. It’s your worst nightmare. A lot of antivirus software, including the big names, cannot yet detect or stop it. If your computer gets it, CryptoLocker takes all your files hostage by encrypting them and giving you a certain amount of time to send a certain amount of money to the man behind the virus.
The encryption is very tidy, and so far seems uncrackable (well, crackable, but it might take a couple centuries). If you tamper with the virus itself, it will pretty much self-destruct and take everything with it. And the way the money is transferred, the dick programmer behind it all for the moment is pretty much uncatchable.
YOU CANNOT GET RID OF THIS VIRUS WITHOUT COMPLETELY WIPING YOUR COMPUTER. YOUR ONLY CHANCE IS PREVENTION AND PREPARATION.
Back up your computer to something like an external hard-drive, or even an internal hard-drive that you just take out and stuff away somewhere for safe keeping. Make sure your antivirus is up to date, avoid skeevy sites, and don’t open random emails. DO NOT download email attachments unless you know exactly what it is, because that seems to be how this is primarily being transmitted.
We’ve actually run into this at work. It’s extremely aggressive and a major fucking pain to get rid of. One of our guys got infected with it and even paid the company whatever fee they charge to decrypt the files, and due to “an error processing the first payment”, ended up double-charging him (no refunds, of course) and is virtually untrackable.
Literally fuck this guy with a cactus. Like, if you see him, offer to introduce him to your little cactus friend in a quite personal and intimate manner. This shit is FUCKING INEXCUSABLE.
Also, bulk up on your virus protection, limit your porn and illegal cartoon-watching and torrents to safe sites, DO NOT OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU’RE EXPECTING THEM, and just be careful in general, cause this one is one of the nastiest viruses around.
I wouldn’t reblog a virus alert unless I was dead serious about how bad it is.
Over the years, Microsoft has started to become greedy with their Microsoft Office packages, previously, it was pre-included in Windows computers, and then, they were separately sold. Now, they’re yearly subscriptions (like an Anti-virus)
It’s time to make a stand! (And no, don’t even pirate their software.)
LibreOffice - a software that’s very similar to Microsoft Office BUT THIS ONE’s FREE!
